Snowdon

Part 1 - Steve & Jamie

Saturday 28th July was a fine day for a recce up mount Snowdon. We climbed up and down in 3hrs 40mins. We thought this was a good effort, however on this day there was the Snowdon international race, the winner finishing in an up and down time of 1 hour! But we achieved our aim to prepare detailed plans for the forthcoming J-U-M-P sponsored walk.

Part 2 - J-U-M-P members and volunteers

Saturday 18th August 2007. With the coach making its last pickup at 0715hrs, it started on route to Snowdon with 24 willing people on board, eager to set about the challenge of climbing mount Snowdon and raising the money promised by their sponsors. The weather upon departing Warrington was a little grim. As we approached Llanberis, A phone call from Jamie our vice chairman warned us to expect severe weather conditions. We arrived at Llanberis to be greeted with some really heavy rain and we were only at the drop point!

After much deliberation and discussion, we decided (after quickly purchasing some wet proofs for the walkers) we would set of, with the aim of getting to Halfway House. On reaching this point we would evaluate the conditions before tackling the summit.

Upon commencing the walk, we quickly realized our chances of making it to the top would be limited. As we slowly made our way up the mountain, the higher we got the more we battled against the elements and I would like to praise all the walkers for their sterling efforts in tackling this climb in such severe weather conditions. We made it to Halfway House with all walkers still intact (which was a major achievement in itself). After a brief conversation with the mountain rescue it was decided to head back down the mountain. This obviously left all the walkers rather disappointed but I believe common sense prevailed. To get two thirds of the way up the mountain was an achievement in its own right. Once down the mountain we decided to stop on the way back for a well earned drink or two.

To all you brave walkers we at J-U-M-P salute you for your tremendous efforts in the most severe and appalling weather conditions. Finally let’s look forward to this adventure in kinder conditions.

Once again thank you, all your efforts on our behalf are very much appreciated
