The history of this event

It all began ....................Jacob's Ladder - 2005

On 29th May 2005 J-U-M-P held a sponsored walk over Jacob’s Ladder in the Peak District. The route taken was approximately 8 miles over hills and rocky terrain that is hard for even the experienced walkers.

Everyone that took part completed the challenge with some even overcoming their fear of heights to do it with thehighest part being almost 2000 feet above sea level. The walkers set off around 10am and J-U-M-P volunteers kept everyone organised by marshalling the group.

Luckily the weather couldn’t have been any better so we could all enjoy the fantastic views of the district from the top and everyone had a great day even though they were exhausted at the end of it.

At the end of the walk everyone met up in the Rambler’s Inn for a celebratory drink for all their efforts and telling stories of their adventures during the walk.

Once all the sponsorship money was in J-U-M-P raised around £1200 and we’d like to say thank you firstly to all the people who took part and raised money for J-U-M-P and secondly to all the J-U-M-P volunteers who made it a safe and extremely well organised day so everybody enjoyed themselves at the sametime as being safe and sound.

Jacob's Ladder - 2006

Once again this event was great success and was very well attended with many different faces.

All J-U-M-P members attended apart from two who unfortunately were unable to attend. The weekend for some started on the Friday when Christine our chairperson and partner camped out on Coopers camp site. They were joined on Saturday when the following arrived. Steve, Linda, Jamie, Denise, Aimee, Tom, and Anna.

A good night was had by all in the Old Nags Head. The remainder of the walkers arrived on the Sunday morning by minibus. This gave us a total of 20 walkers plus Gary, Paul and Linda, who completed the shorter walk to Jacobs Ladder.

Having completed the safety brief the main walking party commenced walking at 1100hrs. We set of at a steady pace to allow the walkers to get warmed up by the end of the first mile. After this mile is complete the walk starts to gradually climb for 2.5 miles culminating in a very steep climb up an outcrop of rocks on Kinder Plateau. At this point I would like to congratulate all walkers who kept together during a very decent pace. Once we negotiated the rocks we stopped for some earned lunch... Up to this point the weather had been very kind to us.

Once lunch had half digested we set of to cross Kinder Plateau. This is the highest point during the walk. Within 200m the heavens opened and with a very strong wind this made conditions very unpleasant for some 10 minutes. But testaments to this group of volunteers not one moan or groan just a steely eyed determination to crack on. Having crossed the plateau we made our way to Noe Stool to begin the desent to Jacobs Ladder. After a quick group photo on Jacobs Ladder we quickly made our desent down the ladder to be met by three smiling faces in Linda, Gary, & Paul.

Who had walked to the opposite way and then continued to walk with the group Once you leave Jacobs Ladder the walk is flat on track and tarmac road for the next 20 minutes. We reached Upper Booth Farm had a quick 15minute break and some refreshments before continuing the walk. Now having completed this walk many times I am fully aware of the sting in the tale.

Come on guys I said knowing we only had 1.6m to the finish; however upon leaving the farm we crossed the field to see a very short steep incline. Once again no moans or groans just effort in bucket loads. Once we tackled the climb it was plain sailing all the way to the Old Nags Head for a well earned pint or two.

On behalf of J-U-M-P I would like to thank all persons connected with the walk your efforts were very much appreciated.
